Winter climbing skills

Alex, Alasdair and I headed to the Northern Corries to find some winter to climb in after Saturday’s thaw. There is some evidence of Storm Doris, but the snow line was back up to around 900 metres.

We headed into Coire Laogh Mor, as the winds on tops looked very strong and we wanted some shelter. We found some decent grade II mixed ground, firm snow and even some ice to look at movement skills, belay building and snow anchors. We then padded over to Creagan Coire Cha-no, but there was nothing in and even the gullies were more or less empty.

The freezing level was above the summits – with big puddles at 1000m – and it was quite mild for most of the day. By mid afternoon the snow pack was quite wet. On the way down, the freezing level dropped to around 750m and it started to snow, but this was heavy rain at the car.
