MCofS safety seminar

Filed under: Winter Conditions — davy @ 12:49 pm

Spent the weekend instructing at the MCofS University club’s safety seminar. The students had a pretty good weekend – as did the instructors! Saturday I spent helping out with navigation and sunday I taught Nicky (from Stirling) and Olly (from Aberdeen) some rope skills. If was a wet day, so we were inside all morning then wet outside onto Glenmore Lodge’s tower to look at multi-pitch change overs and abseil descents.

Some fresh snow fell in the Northern Corries on sunday, although I’m not sure how good the climbing will be – turf definitely won’t be frozen yet.

Scout Assessor’s Weekend

Filed under: Winter Conditions — davy @ 10:23 am

Spent the weekend in Glen Lyon at the Scottish Scout’s Hill activities forum – we spent a day on Saturday looking at ML/WGL assessing skills with Steve Spalding – Sunday I was out teaching groups looking at Mountain Leader rope work and steep ground skills.

Cold temperatures as I headed back and a good dusting of snow on the Lawers group – Meall Tarmachan looking quite wintery in the setting sun – I even thought I saw some ice forming on the waterfalls above Lawers Dam.

North Face Route

Filed under: Uncategorized — davy @ 1:41 pm

Andrew, Simon and I climbed a surprisingly dry North Face Route on the Buchaille yesterday – we had the mountain completely to ourselves. The day clagged in towards the end of the afternoon. All but a few moves on the route were dry – predictably the chimney pitch was damp, but the rest of the route gave an excellent climb on a windless and mild day.

We had some CPD on the way down, Andrew practiced short-roping techniques to get us down Curved Ridge.
