Festive Update

Filed under: Mountaineering, Winter Conditions — davy @ 10:35 am

A mild Christmas – I was up hill walking on the 23rd, but I’ve lost the connector for the digital camera -  took a lead out of Doug’s book and went up Meall Gheodih. An easy Munro with interesting ground near the top, but pretty easy. Very mild but a couple of lovely patches of neve which I made sure took in!

Andrew was up the Ben yesterday – he reports good icy patches in place, but a good day.

We’l try and upload some pictures, but we’re off to Alp D’huez tomorrow for some ski et apres ski – in the mean time have look at

Thanks to Doug Bryce this post:

Ended up going up Meall Gheoddih on Sunday.  It turned out to be very
quick munro – Left edinburgh at 8.30am – and by 12.40 was on the top…

Seems to be a decent amount of snow :-)

Make sure you have a look at Doug’s site:

http://www.haggistrap.co.uk

It’s got some superb topos for off-piste skiing in Scotland – and features the world’s only online guide to “Extreme Skiing” on Ben Nevis.

Me and the clone decided to have a quick self guided intro in to the tactile world of night riding. Having borrowed some lights from work we set out to do a well trodden hour loup in Bilsdale. When I say “lights” you may picture objects with some natural brilliance which is at some odds with what we had strapped to our bars. Happily the huge moon helped to fill in any gaps in our field of vision.Simply by riding a familiar route with only a jumpy strip of mud and heather visible at any one moment totally transforms it into an esoteric adventure. The mellow silvery views of the moors in the moonlight helped give the brief outing an eerie flavour. Remind me on the next ride to either get a newer battery or at the very least not unwttingly give my good battery to my brother by mistake

Practice makes perfect

Pretty grotty weekend here in Edinburgh, so I went up to Blackford Quarry to practice rescuing a stuck rucksack in the rain. Cleared up nicely later on, and I was joined by two German speaking climbers actually climbing in Blackford Quarry!

Picture shows using clove hitches on an HMS krab in an out-of-reach anchor situation.
