Uphill Skiing in the Ben Lawers Area

Filed under: Ski Touring, Winter Conditions — andrew @ 7:58 pm

Myself and George Reid had a great day skiing up Beinn Glas. The northern slope was scoured and was as smooth as a blue run! We managed a bit of heather bashing to ski down to within a hundred metres of the road
The temperature was a thaw inducing 7 degrees at the car park. A load of snow disappeared during the day on the sunny southern slopes.

Glen Dochart Skiing

Filed under: Ski Touring, Winter Conditions — davy @ 10:26 pm

Andrew was up ski touring in Glen Dochart around Meall nan Sanha today. Snow cover started at about 400m – grass showing through more or less everywhere.  Very smooth, scoured snow above 700m which allowed good skiiing.

Pentland Ski Touring

More photos from Andrew skiing in the Pentlands. Fantastic cover on good snow and great powder in places.

New Year Skiing (and some climbing)

Filed under: Ski Touring, Skiing, Winter Climbing, Winter Conditions — davy @ 10:19 am

Some photos of Skiing – Doug Byrce http://www.haggistrap.co.uk and Grigor did a ski traverse of Stob Gobhar on New Year’s day. Closer to home, both Doug and Andrew have been out ski touring in the Pentlands – great cover and close to home.

Road conditions and work have prevented me getting climbing, but last night Lee and I went up to Careketton Hill in the Pentlands and climbed the central gully which was chocked full of snow and the rock wall at the top was burried. We then climbed a steepish trufy line at about grade III in a blizzard before we thought we’d better bale.
Lots of deep, slabby snow in places – may only be the pentlands, but be aware never the less – snow can avalanche here, too!

Caringorm Plateau

Caringorm Plateau

I bumped into Doug Bryce on saturday – he and Jamie were off for tour up to Ben Macdui.

Doug says “Once we got up onto the plateau it turned out to be a great tour – with more than enough snow.”
See Doug’s site for more photos.
