Intro to Winter Climbing

I was working for Glenmore Lodge the last weekend on an Introduction to Winter Climbing course with Martin and Colum in the Northern Corries.

Mild conditions made it a challenge to find good climbing, but on Saturday we climbed a route up to Fiacall Buttress to give some pretty good climbing on snow, frozen turf and some ice. We finished up the ridge and had a great walk around and back to the ski-area.

All the main gully lines a threatened with cornice collapse, and we saw a big one coming down the Trident area.

Above freezing overnight, so we headed into Coire an Lochan hoping the extra height might let some ice hang on in there. Lots of cornice collapse activity and some big rocks coming down the cliffs (boom!!) kept us way over the right of the corrie where we found a nice grade II line on snow, ice and turf.

It freshen-ed up and was raining as we headed down, but cleared nicely by the end of the day

Bit of a yo-yo with freezing levels this week, but looking cooler again by the end of the week.
