Barry, Hilda and I went up to Winter Corrie in Glen Clova yesterday.
It was their first winter climb, so we chose Easy Gully which gave an excellent icy easy route with a couple of testing steeper bits that allowed Barry and Hilda to use two ice tools in places. We also looked at winter anchors and managed to place several ice screws.
The snow was mainly firm but slabby in places – The SE facing rim of the corrie had cornices and a slab broke away leading to an avalanche – see picture below – crown wall and slab in top lef of photo, and debris fan running top left to bottom right.
Much milder today – I doubt things will hang on long in Glen Clova.
